Music And Depression, Epilogue

Flavio, I hope you'll excuse me. It was impossible for me not to make this reference

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

Ride, To Infinity, and Nowhere!

Ride's Nowhere appears to me as a masterpiece, mingling melody with violence in a glorious crash of cymbals, acoustic guitar strumming, overdrive & reverb drenched electrics and a powerhouse rhythm section. The noise sister to Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space and pop brother of Loveless is of course English, and obliterates any recent attempt to make something "in the same style but better". This record is in fact so good I can't write anything more than providing you with means to listen to it and a high-res picture of the cover. Which was rapidly taken by yours truly in blatant disregard for copyright laws but never ending admiration for the artist, unknown to me.

another awesome artwork for another awesome record

Ah, maybe one thing to say before I end this article: If that wave on the cover is the start of a 30 meter high tsunami, then it's a pretty good equivalent to the music that's about to crash in your ears, leaving no survivors when it washes out in a foam of goodness.

Mammoth Mammoth

Australia has always been a land of finely-crafted music and compositions.

AC/DC
Buffalo
Today, Mammoth Mammoth valiantly carries the task of being awesome. How do I know that?

Because of this (from their website):

"WE ARE THE LOUDEST AND GREATEST BAND IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. WE ROCK SO HARD THAT SOMETIMES IT CONFUSES US. WE THINK, "JESUS H CHRIST! WHAT WAS THAT?!" BECAUSE THE SIZE OF THE ROCK THAT WE MANAGE TO PRODUCE TRANSCENDS WHAT THE HUMAN BRAIN CAN MENTALLY TAKE IN. THE CEREBRAL CORTEX SHUTS DOWN.

WHERE AS SOME PEOPLE MIGHT SEE THIS AS A PROBLEM. WE, MAMMOTH MAMMOTH SEE IT AS THE ULTIMATE POSITIVE. IT IS WHAT SETS US APART FROM THE MEL & KIMS, SLAYERS AND MIDNIGHT OILS. IT IS WHAT MAKES US TRULY MAMMOTH.

FOR TO BE TRULY MAMMOTH BOTH IN SIZE AND IN SOUND, EACH MEMBER OF THE UNITED FORCE THAT IS MAMMOTH MAMMOTH MUST BE TRULY WILLING TO BLEED. BLEED FROM THE FINGERS, FACE AND GOAT BAG. THEY MUST BE WILLING TO PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY PUNISH THEMSLEVES IN ORDER TO BRING OUT THE INNER MAMMOTH.

WE ARE MAMMOTH. FUCKING MAMMOTH. WE WILL DESTROY. WE HAVE IN THE PAST (666BC) AND WE SHALL DO SO AGAIN IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE.

WHETHER THE WORLD IS READY FOR US IS A DIFFERENT STORY.

FUCK EM. WE ARE MAMMOTH.

BIGGER THAN JESUS. LOUDER THAN HELL!"

Hells Yes.

http://www.myspace.com/mammothxmammoth

They have an EP and an LP out, both of which I have the utmost inexplicable admiration for.  They're respectively called "Mammoth Mammoth" and "Mammoth". How could you not like that?

Long live the Mammoth!

Majorie? & t.E.S.S.I.M.: t.B.U.Ed.

Indie (often mentioned with its evil sidekick, Pop). Some people hate it, some love it, some just don't care ("if it sounds good, I'll get it"). Basically what pitchfork built its fame on, it seems to be an extremely vivid and rapidly evolving microcosm of the music industry, with its unknown heroes, pioneers, over-anticipated releases, add infinitum ...

If I were to attempt a semi-intelligent remark, I'd say that it also has a vast potential market, because one thing fans seem to have in common is the willingness to spend a ridiculous amount of money on it, even if they'll illegally download enough to fill their hard drive, their mother's hard drive, and their mother's uncle's college roomate's grandson's best friend's hard drive at the same time.

Notice also that indie doesn't mean anything: "indie" comes on major labels, and not all independent labels release "indie". That being said, I'll be the first to argue that most genre names (if not completely senseless) are, by the time they become accepted, somewhere between inappropriate and incorrect.

But to be honest, it's hard to escape whatever we ended up conveniently calling indie. And why would you? If you look hard enough anywhere, you're bound to find something good (at least in music, indie is no exception). If most thing labeled indie have in common, it's to have catchy melodies. And if you go with that criteria, you'll find some catchy shit indeed.

Moving on.

This mix was quickly thrown together in a time of packing and leaving beautiful places/people for this godforsaken overheated summer. It is a random combination of things I've mostly found in the past year. Probably haven't digested all of it, but you tell me what you think.

The Elephant Space Snowstorm Catchy Indie Pop Mix (The Barely Underground  Edition)
  1. Wake Up - Arcade Fire
  2. Psychic City - YACHT
  3. Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa - Vampire Weekend
  4. Ring Ring - Sleigh Bells
  5. For Reverend Green - Animal Collective
  6. Red Sock Pugie - Foals
  7. Postcards From Italy - Beirut
  8. Lit Up - The National
  9. While We Go Dancing - White Rabbits
  10. Jumping Jack - tUnE-yArDs
  11. Jodi - The Dodos
  12. Zebra - Beach House
  13. Beach Comber - Real Estate
  14. Borderline - The Flaming Lips With Stardeath & White Dwarfs
  15. All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem

 "I'm outta here"
And I'll do another album review very soon. Not that I think any of our 3 readers (that's you! thanks for reading! please comment!) misses them, but probably because you're annoyed by Flavio and myself mostly using this blog as an opportunity to throw mixes at each other over the internets.

Hope the summer's going well for you all,

A personnal conclusion concerning the Rolling Stones

A few weeks ago, I decided it would be interesting to take a closer look at a band I've never understood:

      The Rolling Stones.

I decided I'd pick a couple of their supposedly "golden era" albums, ie Exile On Main Street and Beggars Banquet, listen thouroughly to both and write a review about the one I'd have the most interesting things to say.

I did the first part. Screw the second part, there's no way I'm ever writing anything about those people without a better reason than open-mindedness.

      What a waste of time.

Seriously people, what the hell happened? Enlighten me, please.

Edit, March 25th: Thanks to Josh for the enlightenment. Still not a big fan, but I guess they represent something I've been oblivious to in the past.

Spring Mix #4 (Now with artsy coments!)

It was late, I had just read a terrible book, I got a little over-inspired. I ended up writing this, which my barely functioning brain imagined as "a cool thing to read while you listen to this new awesome installment of our spring mix". This Volume III, by the way, is meant to be listened in the order in which it's presented, not necessarily in one session, but definitely as a whole. The text is here if you have time to waste.

As usual, this mix has as goal to please your ears with things you might not know or have heard in a different context. Hope you like it.

      -----------------

1 - The Devil Made You High

Raoul Duke on the highway between LA and Vegas, late afternoon. No possible way to have clear thought. Just need to keep driving, fast. Wind in your face, sunset in your eyes. Keep Driving!

       2 - Gloria

Stopped to get gas, otherwise the red shark wasn't going to make it alive out of there. Everything looks old fashioned. Owner tells you this rest area hasn't been renovated since the late sixties, and laughs when he mentions that the fake chrome started peeling off in the mid-eighties. This, somehow, pulls you out of autopilot.

      3 - African Nights

That nap on the back seat at the gas station lasted longer than expected. With the last few rays of light, eat kilometers off that empty highway, resorting to counting the regular lines on the road when  enumerating cars with Brazilian license plates becomes mildly amusing.

      4 - World News

The lane next over is always faster
And you wait so long until you're so bothered
But right after you complete your merge
The lane you started in gets going
And while you wait for your luck to change
All you can think of is where you started
You don't like anything on local radio
So you fumble around 'til you land on NPR
      And listen to world news
Well, a bomb went off in the parking lot
Of a newly opened sunni marketplace
And a cloud covers your car at just the right time
For you to see the dark on your face
      in the mirror

(Local Natives, Self Titled, Frenchkiss 2010)

      5 - Walkabout
Ended up where you wanted. Had a good night's sleep. Walking by the shore, god is sand annoying. Waves attack your hangovered brain like a swarm of blueberry monkeys, and you can't get that stupid song out of your head. Work, day not worth mentionning.

      6 - All Caps

Night again. Went through your old hard drive you asked to be sent from home. Some '60s Batman episodes still blow your mind, make you wonder who the hell came up with that stuff.

7 - How They Kill You

Even though shady parts of Gotham City were supposed to make kids scared, that little walk outside after a late cheap dinner scared you more than any overdone makeup ever has.

      8 - Forge Of Vulcan

Half dreaming in the subway you took to get home quicker. Flickering hospital lights, alone in the wagon. The long alley of seats turns into the corridors of the Millenium Falcon, expecting to see Luke's head shoot out of the secret smuggling compartment anytime now.

      9 - Rhododendron

Back home. Bed never seemed as fluffy, comfortable and welcoming. Daze out into sleep because of pure exhaustion.

      10 - Baba O'Riley

Wake up, munch those lucky charms, sing in the shower, listen to a violin solo. Good day ahead, feel like a pirate.

      11 - Never Say Die

Another kind of pumped. The coffee kicked in, you could run for miles. Well, probably not, but still. Get out, lock door, more sun. Walking swifly to newspaper stand, smile to the cute neighbour.

      12 -Take It Easy

Job's surprisingly tasteless, but the window lets you enjoy the sun. Hang out in the park during lunch break with some friends. Is that a dog chasing a squirrel? Realize how terrible some are at climbing.

13 - No Future Part III : Escape From No Future

Like Rex trying to climb a tree, realize that your efforts to improve your life have basically all failed in the past four years.
"So now at Rock Ridge Pharmacy I will be waiting for my man
But there is another down in the dungeon who never gave up the fight
And he'll be forever screaming sometimes I hear him say on a quiet night
      He says
You will always be a loser now
You will always be a loser
You will always be a loser and that's okay"
(Titus Andronicus, The Monitor, XL Recordings 2010)

      That's perfectly fine.

      14 - Bankrobber

Or is it? Decide you're going to rob a bank. It ends up being a local convenience store. The loot also ends up being a pack of gum. What the heck, you still saved the price of a pack of gum and felt like a thief for 10 seconds.
      Gum tastes terrible.

      15 - Horny Hippies

"We were walking down the block when we thought the bomb went off
And our hearts nearly stopped at the sound
When we looked and we found that it hit some other crowd
I was glad it wasn't us, yeah I was proud
Cause I fall and I break just as easy as an egg
Yeah, my shell isn't as hard as it seems
When my insides gush out there's no telling what it's about
When it'll stop, when it'll seed, when it'll bleed
Yeah, I just stay in my home, in my home, in my home
Yeah, I just stay in my home, in my home, in my home
Well, I take a look outside at the pretty girls outside
But I can't make myself say "Hi" because I'm scared
Because I spend all this time all locked up inside
It's the only place I know how to bare
Cause you can go out and meet some girl you can't defeat
And you think that she must be the one
Until you're walking down the isle and she takes away your smile
Boy you wish you hadn't dialed before you wrung
Oh you should stay in your home, in your home, in your home
Oh you should stay in your home, in your home, in your home
Well they talk of your past, yeah they said it wouldn't last
But they're running pretty fast back on their word
It was gone for a while but it's coming back in style
Better run back where you're from and join the mass
Yeah we'll just stay in our home, in our homes
Yeah we'll just stay in our home, in our home"

(The Dodos, Beware Of The Maniacs, selfreleased, 2006)

Walk back, read a book, go to bed.

      16 - Star Sail

Can't sleep. Try to bore yourself to oblivion. Watch the new episode of Dr. Who, which is obviously a bad choice. But who the hell comes up with this stuff?

      17 - Jenny Ondioline

Finally fell asleep. Dream basically foreshadows the two-day road trip you've planned for your weekend, although most of it appears as if those kaleidoscope glasses you've been suggesting to toy companies finally became available. Weird sense of being on autopilot again. The surrounding scenery seems to be strangely repeating. "You'll never get off this road!", seems to be saying this smiling tree on the left. Never ending strip of tarmac ends up being the most mesmerizing thing you've seen since that time you stared at the white album spin on your turntable from Back In The USSR to Good Night.

More Spring Songs For More Spring Moments

This mix is organized in a fashion similar to the Spring Mix Numero Uno. To balance that, expect an unrelated but upcoming three-part heavy music mix.

      Allmusic

Looking for new music is an activity that has recently reached the stage of unhealthy obsession, and the internet seriously didn't help.

I have to admit that it started nicely. The (very famous) music listening program (that doesn't fall far from the tree) I use has a built browser that allows easy access to review and biographies, which include lists of similar artists. I don't remember which countless bands were discovered during nights of music exploration, but there were definitely many and I don't regret any hour that I wasted on there.

But like anything in this entire universe, AyToons has some obvious problems. The main one, for me, was the absence of any AC/DC information. There, at the bottom of each review, each biography, I thought I had found the culprit: Allmusic.

How could something pretending to cover all music not have AC/DC?

The answer to this futile question doesn't really matter. The important part is that this led me to allmusic.

This website is evil. Beautifully evil. Reviews are long, links are numerous, exploration endless. They do give arbitrary ratings to the music, but  I have to admit I've mostly agreed with them over the years (mostly). They cover, well, all music (try to guess what allmovie & allgame are about) and do a pretty good job at it. Articles are sometimes interesting, and their news selection is honest, but that's not really what they're there for. They're there to expand your musical horizons - like that other guy would say, to infinity and beyond.

Well that was mildly interesting. I said I'd write this though, so here it is. Maybe I'll change it soon.

List #1: High School Years, Top 5

Five records I will forever associate with high school

Why is this interesting? Well, first of all, maybe you'll like one of them - they're all definitely worth a try. Second, try to remember your top 5 high school records . It'll be worthwhile, I promise.

      1) Secret Machines: Ten Silver Drops
      2006, Reprise Records

First heard this band live opening for Foo Fighters in 9th grade. Bought their second LP in 10th, put it on repeat in my room for work, which invariably happened between 1 and 5 am, with my only light being this massive orange neon that somehow ended there. Quite the atmosphere, believe me on that one.

Notice the moustache and the obscene amount of gear. Three Orange half stacks! You'll want to put it up to 11 for this one.

Reading reviews of this album for the first time, I realize that most people were disappointed by this. I guess I'm lucky to be one of the few still able to enjoy this record.

      2) Firebird: Hot Wings
      2006, Rise Above Records

The album that reminds me why reading Rock & Folk (French hipster music magazine par excellence) although sometimes excruciatingly painful, can be rewarding. From time to time, they'll actually mention (or maybe even review?) a band that's actually so much higher than all the other puree they're promoting that it'll make you wonder who the hell writes these things (as I would find out, a notorious past-his-prime cokehead edits it - does this explain it ?).

Interesting fact: Bill Steer played guitar in founding UK "grindcore" (??) bands Carcass and Napalm Death before forming this glorious power trio.

Probably one of the first albums I listened to entirely so many times the only way I can remember a song off it is by humming the end of the one preceding it.

      3) Nebula: Apollo/Atomic Ritual/To The Center
      2006, Liquor And Poker/ 2003, Liquor And Poker/ 1999, Sweet Nothing Records

Ah, hanging out with your local high school stoners. Quite an experience. The ironic thing is that I was the one not smoking, and they were the ones not listening to stoner. Another proof that this denomination is just plain wrong? Probably (go see Such Hawks Such Hounds. now.).

But Nebula isn't your run of the mill Queens of the Stone Age. No, contrarily to Homme's projects, these guys make albums with only good songs. You'll hear the Stooges as much as you'll recognize Hawkwind here, and that can't be half bad, right?

I'm pretty sure I also heard of Nebula in Rock & Folk, god bless their evil souls. Started with a heavy rotation of their latest record, Apollo, then ordered their psychedelic masterpiece Atomic Ritual (admire the cheesy cover). Found To The Center pretty cheap at the Virgin Champs Elysees, for those who are familiar with heaven. Some wicked triumvirat you have there - counting it as one entry because really it should really be considered a triple album dedicated to second hand highs.

      4) Hawkwind: Space Ritual
      1973, United Artists

All I'm going to do is quote the 1973 advertisement for this album, "88 minutes of brain damage" and chuckle.

      5) AC/DC: If You Want Blood (You've Got It)
      1978, Epic Records

Lets start with the cover for this one:

      Yeah.

AC/DC, you like them or you don't, but listen to this album at least once entirely before deciding you can't deal with them. Skip the Brian Johnson era (i.e. every album since Highway To Hell), and go directly for something that'll make you want to do the duck walk dressed like a british schoolboy while drinking whisky and playing air guitar:

      Angus! Angus! Angus! Angus!

If this doesn't make you want to at least tap your foot, we can definitely still be friends. You're missing out though...

      Alllmusic Review (3.5/5)

Are those record actually objectively interesting?
You tell me. My opinion is too biased.
